This blog was a labour of love. Please visit the new blog http://blackthornworkingdogs.blogspot.com

My name is Donna Brinkworth. Four years ago I moved to Alberta from Northwestern Ontario. I recently completed the requirements to be a CKC tracking judge for TD and TDX and will now work on becoming an urban tracking judge, as it is one of my passions. I've also become involved in the sport of Schutzhund as a member of the Calgary Schutzhund Club, and my boy Caden is showing a lot of promise in this exciting sport. All I need is some land and sheep for the Border Collies to be completely happy in Alberta, and we are working on that! This blog honours tracking, herding and life with the dogs who are my teachers and who bring so much joy into my life. It started out as a training blog for my tracking students. You can check those archives, back in 2005. Over time I have used this blog to journal my own training, share information, and most recently discuss my personal journey since moving here.

This blog may have come to an end, but I hope you will still find good information in the posts from over many years. Thank you for visiting, and enjoy your journey!

Introducing Spiritdance Big Ben, Jet and Ted's pup

10 minutes old

After all that waiting - I was a bit worried that labour was not kicking in, and with a single pup this is a valid concern. I brought Jet to the vet around 4:30 today and my vet, Dr. Ken Hubbard, said the pup's heart was a bit slower than he would like, and so it may be a bit stressed. In went Jet for a c-section and by 6 PM, we met Ben! I was waffling on names until I saw him and Big Ben was so perfect! Ben for 'son' and Big Ben because he is a big boy (I now understand he is normal size for a Border Collie at 400 grams). I have an Uncle Ben whose real name is Eli Kahara, but as a teenager he was nicknamed Big Ben and it stuck. So all the way around I love the name. Plus it is the one syllable preferred by the Border Collie people for working.

First time nursing

And of course I have video!

Jet is not too sure of everything but is settling down. I am so proud of her. The pup reminds me of Ted in many ways, size and shape of head. I hope he has Jet's extra dash of intelligence - Ted is so biddable and eager to please and Jet is just brilliant, though a bit headstrong. I love them both. Jet is a daughter of Scott Glen's Maid (current Open dog) and Ted is a son of Scott's Pleat. By the time I spent the money on breeding this pup and a c-section, I could probably have bought a great dog - but dare I say, I think THIS is a great pup - lucky, lucky me. I feel very blessed.

Aww!!!! Congratulations!

I'm surprised that with both parents having the mask on their face that he didn't get that!

Jenny what is really funny is that the white on his head looks like a combover, or, a "pleat", it's got quite a little cowlick thing going on. He is very active, climbing all over Jet and from nipple to nipple. The only time he mutters is when he is frustrated in his sleep position or on a climbing exploit!

Is he a tri or black and white? (look under his tail and if it's tan, he'll be a tri)

Donna Brinkworth said...

Hi Jenny, this is weird, I just asked about genetics on my facebook wall. I read that two tris only produce tris "except for unexpected exceptions!
LOL. I see no tan under his tail or anywhere. Under his tail is a faded grey, version of black - that could turn into tan? He is blue-black. I see no tan points anywhere at all.

And he has gained at least 50 grams today. It looked like 75 but he would not stay still - he is one active boy.

Congratulations Jet, Ted and Donna!

I am so happy you ended up with a healthy lovely pup. I'm sure Ben will grow quickly with all those faucets to choose from.

All the best to you

Thanks Susan! Boy, does he have a nose, LOL. He aims right for Jet when she is near. Amazing.
